Every food business operator in India is required to obtain a food license, which is one of the most important licenses governed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) under the FSS (Licensing and Registration of Food Business) Regulations 2011. Most people nowadays are health-conscious, and they must guarantee that a food product is free of adulteration, contamination, and contains hygienic components that match industry requirements before purchasing it. The FSSAI assures that all food products are fit for human consumption. The vast majority of people prefer to consume FSSAI-certified products.

A food business operator must meet the following standards in order to receive an FSSAI license or registration: –

Criteria for eligibility


1, Basic Registration Form 1- An annual turnover of INR 12 lakhs is possible. Form "A"


2. A government-issued permit - The annual turnover fluctuates between more than 12 lakhs to more than 20 crores.Form “B” 

3.Obtain a central license- The annual income of the company surpasses 20 crores. Form “B”


If the applicant/company fails to meet the FSSAI's requirements and fails to present the required documents for a safety assessment, the relevant authority may reject the company's goods. Many of the major firms' products have been rejected in recent decades due to the presence of danger to human health ingredients that do not meet food safety regulations. As a result, businesses must follow FSSAI criteria in order to secure a food license and product approval before releasing a product to the public.

Companies that fail to observe and comply with the Act's rules and requirements incur FSSAI sanctions.


The applicant must carefully complete Form A and confirm that all of the information provided is correct.


 Step 1:Determine your company category on Form A, such as retailer, hawker, or manufacturer.


 Step 2: Give the entire name of the person or company.

 Step 3: Select if you are a person, a partner, a proprietor, or the secretary of the dairy co-operative society, and please indicate any further designations.


Step 4: Attach a copy of your identity to the form, such as a driver's license, Aadhaar card, passport, or ration card.


Step 5: Include your mailing address, as well as a valid phone number and email address.



Step 6: Determine the location or area where the food company will be operated, as well as the address of the premises.


Step 7: The applicant or corporation must submit a full description of the food being manufactured or marketed.


Step 8: If you're launching a new business, add a tentative start date in the form. Specify the start and end dates for a seasonal business.


Step 9: Select a water supply source, whether it's private, public, or anything else.


Step 10: Indicate whether or not the food items were manufactured using electricity.


Step 11: Attach a passport-sized image of the applicant to Form "A."


In addition to the aforementioned requirements, Form B must be completed in order to get a license, whether state or federal.

In the case of dairy products, the applicant's location as well as the installed capacity of Milk Chilling Centers (MCC), Bulk Milk Cooling Centers (BMC), and Milk Processing Units in liters.


After the inspection and satisfaction, the applicant must sign the form before submitting it, and the fssai food license will be issued to food company owners after 45-60 days. Which, according to the applicant's selection on the application form, is valid for 1 to 5 years.
